Doing Business on the Eastern Shore of Maryland
The companies of
Maryland's Lower Eastern Shore are eager to do business with you.
They range from small companies to some whose names you see and hear
every day. While they vary in size and the products they sell, they
all share a competitive edge and commitment to customers and quality
that can work for you.
About the Area
Lying just east of the Chesapeake Bay, due west of the Atlantic
Ocean and central to the Delmarva Peninsula, the Shore is a
place of special contrasts. Our rural farming and recreation area
has vast green spaces and wide sandy beaches. Watermen set out
before dawn to catch the
Maryland
blue crab and other fish and seafoods that are in great demand
around the world. There are small towns where residents still shop
on Main Street
and greet each other by name. The folks in these towns work for
companies that are top in their industries. A well-designed and
maintained transportation system helps them deliver products on
time, at competitive prices, worldwide. Over 90% of the products
that leave the Lower Eastern Shore are destined for ports beyond
Maryland.
Technology
To keep pace with the technologies that help us maintain our
competitive edge, our companies train our employees. One company
receives engineering and computer science classes via satellite from
the National Technological University. The LSMN offers Plant Manager
and technical seminars to introduce workers to statistical quality
control as well as customer focus and commitment. These quality
programs also help companies achieve ISO 9000 and World Class
certifications. Our monthly Resource Management forums address human
resource issues. Regulatory update programs keep companies abreast
of the latest enactments and rulings. Lower Eastern Shore schools,
as partners with companies, offer education and career opportunities
throughout the Lower Shore.
Rapid advances in technology are forcing businesses of all kinds to
address technological issues that could significantly impact
productivity and profits. The Lower Shore Manufacturing Network
(LSMN) offers an
organized forum through which private businesses in
Somerset,
Wicomico and Worcester counties can focus on such issues at any
level of technology from the most simplistic to the most
sophisticated. The primary objectives of the LSMN are to:
-
Stimulate growth and development
of technological businesses throughout the region;
-
Optimize the application of
technology to all businesses from productivity improvements; and
-
Foster linkages among the private
sector, economic development, local government and education
officials.
We
are here to foster a growth environment for companies doing business
on the Lower Shore as well as companies relocating here.
